Getting started

Gaffer needs a Mac with macOS 14 or later and Bluetooth turned on. It’s tested with amaran P60x and P60c. Other amaran lights may work too.

On first launch, allow Gaffer to use Bluetooth when macOS asks, then follow setup to find and pair your lights. Keep them powered on and within a few metres of your Mac while you pair.

The Stream Deck plugin is coming soon to the Elgato Marketplace as a separate download, and needs the Stream Deck app. It talks to Gaffer on the same Mac, so Gaffer needs to be running for your keys and dials to work. Gaffer › Settings › Stream Deck shows whether the plugin is installed and connected.

Troubleshooting

A light doesn’t show up

Check that the light is on and close to your Mac. If it’s still connected to the amaran app on your phone, close that app or turn off your phone’s Bluetooth, then search again. Updating the light’s firmware with the amaran app can also help.

Gaffer can’t use Bluetooth

Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Bluetooth and make sure Gaffer is turned on, then quit and reopen Gaffer.

A light keeps dropping

Gaffer reconnects dropped lights on its own. If one drops often, move it closer to your Mac or away from metal stands, USB 3 hubs and Wi-Fi routers, which can crowd Bluetooth. If a light stops responding entirely, power-cycle it and Gaffer will pick it back up.

Stream Deck keys are blank or don’t respond

Make sure Gaffer is open; when it isn’t, every key shows “Not running”, and pressing one opens it. Then check Gaffer › Settings › Stream Deck: if it says the plugin isn’t installed, it’s coming soon to the Elgato Marketplace. If it’s installed but not connected, quit and reopen the Stream Deck app. If a key shows a scene or light you’ve since deleted, drop the action on it again.

Starting over with a light

Remove the light in Gaffer, reset it following amaran’s instructions for your model, then pair it again.

Common questions

Will my light work?

Gaffer is tested with the amaran P60x and P60c. If you have another amaran light, try it and tell us how it went, with its model and firmware version. That’s how new lights get added.

Is Gaffer made by amaran?

No. Gaffer is an independent app, not made by or affiliated with amaran or Aputure.

Do I need an account?

No. Gaffer talks to your lights directly over Bluetooth, with no account and no cloud service. The privacy page has the details.

How do I know what’s new?

Every release of the app and the Stream Deck plugin is listed in the changelog.

Report a bug or get in touch

To help us fix a bug quickly, include your Gaffer version, your macOS version, your lights’ models and firmware, and what you did just before it went wrong.

Sharing usage data, which you can turn on in Settings › General, sends crash details automatically and helps us spot problems before you have to write in.
